American Viticultural Area (AVA) — A specific region of winemaking in the United States, distinguished by geographic features, with boundaries defined by the Bureau of Alcohol and Tobacco Taxes.
Unlike most European wine appellations by origin, AVA defines only the geographic location where at least 85% of the grapes used to make wine must be grown. AVA is more like Italian IGT (IGP) than any other European appellation of origin. AVAs do not limit the variety of grapes grown, the method of vinification or the yield per hectare. AVAs also vary in area and may be part of other AVAs.
