The Palatinate is the second largest of Germany's 13 wine regions. It is one of the most important wine regions. The vineyard area is 23,461 hectares. Production of the region is characterized by using of modern technologies and traditional viticulture methods. The soil in the region is quite diverse: sandstone, limestone, marl, loess-like loam, granite and a few isolated patches of shale. Summers are dry but not too hot. Winter is quite mild.

The most planted grape variety in the region is Riesling, followed by Dornfelder, Müller-Thurgau, Portugieser and Pinot Noir.
