The commune of Mesnil-sur-Oger is the part of the Cote des Blancs zone, it is one of the 17 in Champagne (not to be confused with the sub-region of the same name which are also Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Cote des Bar). Mesnil is one of the 6 Grand Cru communes in the Cote des Blancs zone, and the status of such communes in Champagne is historically defined on the basis of the so-called. echelle des crus. This old system of classification was officially abolished in 2010, but it continues to have a decisive influence on the perception of communes. Echelle descrus was based on the percentage of the quality of grapes from a particular wine-growing commune and its assigned price. For 100% of this price, Grand Cru grapes (17 communes) went, for 90−99% - Premier Cru (42 communes). Course, after the victory of the terroir approach and the focus on individual vineyards, the "cru scale" is an unfortunate anachronism, but it should be remembered that the concept of Grand and Premier Cru in Champagne is different from those adopted, for example, in Bordeaux and Burgundy.
Wines from Mesnil-sur-Oger are considered the most elegant and perfect among the Grands Crus in Cote des Blancs. If, for example, Cramant is considered more "creamy", while Avize is more restrained and ascetic, then Mesnil mixes all these shades plus restrained minerality and drawing clarity. The blanc de blancs from this commune take a particularly long time to develop, and it is not for nothing that the Mesnil terroir was chosen for the epoch-making cuvees from Salon and Krug.
