In front of us is the Vertus Premier Cru commune is one of the most recognizable faces of Côte des Blancs with a limestone "core" on which gravel and rocky layers, alumina, chalk … Let’s add to this a variety of vulnerabilities — the vineyards are facing east, southeast and south which sets the variety of styles of wines. An interesting fact: Vertus is the only one of the classical communes of the subregion where the proportion of pinot noir is quite high is about 10%. Noticeable that a couple of centuries ago, Pinot Noir was cultivated in even greater volumes, but this refers to those times when the entire "white slope" was not so white. Some producers also make quiet Coteaux Champenois here, usually under the name Vertus Rouge.
Most of the vineyards are grouped near the commune where the relief is flat and sometimes turning into low hills. The total area of plots in Vertus is 541 hectares, of which 490 are planted with chardonnay. The commune has a very large number of winegrowers — 470. Not all of them, of course, make champagne on their own but still the percentage of independent producers — récoltants-manipulants and récoltants-coopérateurs — is quite high. The rest sell grapes to big players: Bollinger, Moët & Chandon, Piper-Heidsieck and others.
